Party Etiquette – The Speech

Friday, May 21st, 2010

The guests have arrived and they are all enjoying themselves. Next comes the food and everything seems to be going well. But all the time you have this horrible nervous feeling, all down to the fact that you have to say a few words.  At weddings the feeling can be even worse if you are the groom or bestman.

No matter what the occassion or the type of speech you have to make there are a few things you can do to make the process a little less intimidating.

1. Timing : Be clear about how long you want to speak. Don’t leave it to chance, particularly at a formal event like a wedding.
2. Write it Down : As you are preparing, write the speech down. Highlighting any key points.
3. Start : Try to start the speech with something witty or relevant.
4. Audience : Be aware of who the audience will be.

In all my posts on partyproductsdirect I have highlighted the importance of thorough preparation.  Whether it is the party bags, decorations, or party invitations you  will need to be very clear about what needs to be done. This especially applies to making a speech. It should not be such a big thing that you get paralysed by fear. If necessary seek advice from friends but most importantly prepare well.

If you would like to share some tips or useful information regarding parties please feel free to post a message on our blog. The best advice usually comes from someone with first hand experience.

First Holy Communion Parties

PARTY BAGS AND FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

There are many landmark events in your child’s life and First Holy Communion is one of them. I t is a very special occassion where the child receives the sacrament of First Holy Communion with his / her school class and is proudly supported by family.  Because it is such a major milestone it is a perfect opportunity to gather extended family and friends to celebrate.

It is very important not to lose sight of the religious aspect of the day and give it the priority it warrants but once that is element is arranged the focus should switch to organising a a party that includes family and friends.

As with all parties I cannot emphasise how important it is to plan in advance.  The only thing that will not change is the date. This will be set by the local parish and school so once it is confirmed you can start planning.

The first big decision will centre on where you should hold the party. Basically you have four choices

1. Host the party in your home and do the catering yourself
2. Host the party at home and employ outside caterers
3. Host the party in a venue outside the home and do the catering yourself
4. Host the party in a venue outside the home and let them also look after the catering

The two main influences on what you decide will be

1. The size of your house
2. Budget

There is no doubt that doing all the catering in your own home will save money but that must be balanced with the space available. If you are using the First Holy Communion party as a chance to invite extended family and friends you are more than likely going to need quite a bit of space and don’t forget there will be a mixture of adults and children. The younger guests will need plenty of room to run around and burn off some energy.

The option of doing the catering yourself in an alternative venue is not something I would recommend. The hassle of transporting food on the day of the Holy Communion is something you will not need.

Probably the best option is to host the party at home but get a little help. You could buy in the food and just heat it on the day or you could hire a catering company to do it all from start to finish. Hosting the First Holy Communion party in your home can be more relaxing for the guests and generates a more  “family friendly” atmosphere.

No matter where you decide to host the party you will need First Holy Communion party supplies including invitations, balloons, tableware and of course party bags.  More than likely there will be children involved and although it is a Holy Communion party they will look on it as any other type of party. They will expect sweets, games and party bags.

When it comes to the party bags, basically you have the same options as any birthday party, including  pre filled party bags. In later posts I will deal with Holy Communion party bags in more detail.

ST Patricks’s Day Party

ST PATRICKS DAY PARTY BAGS

First off for those of you who don’t already know St Patrick’s Day is on the 17th March (every year). Traditionally it was just an Irish celebration but over the past decade or so it has grown into a worldwide event.

As with any party it is essential to plan well in advance and get the decorations, tableware and costumes sorted, not forgetting the green beer of course!

And  last but not least the party bags. This is a perfect opportunity for an Irish host to make sure that people leave the  party will a little party bag full of things Irish. There is no end to the things you can put into the bag, music, food, postcards, etc anything green and Irish.

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to find fre filled party bags for your St Patrick’s Day party so don’t leave it too late, you will need to put a little thought into them.

I would start with a green paper bag, which should be easy to get online, or equally as good would be a cellophane party bag tied with a green ribbon and balloon.

What you put into the party bag really depends on the guests. If they are predominantly Irish then go easy on the green but if they are new to the whole event then any green with a Leprechuan is perfect.

So don’t forget to put the 17th March in your diary and either host or get yourself invited to a St Patrick’s Day party.

Adult Party Games – Some Advice

ADULT PARTY GAMES

Although traditionally associated with childrens birthday parties, party games for adults are gaining in popularity all the time. Whether it is a hen party an 18th birthday party or a retirement party hosts are becoming increasinly inventive when it comes to party entertainment.

For younger adults no party is complete without a series of drinking games but for the more mature party goer the range of party games has really improved.

But before you launch yourself into organising a party don’t go overboard on the party games. Give careful consideration to the games you are expecting your guests to play.

In the paragraphs below I outline some broad tips that I hope will help when planning your party games.

House Size : The space you have will play a large part in the games you finally select. But don’t worry there is a game for every venue.

Time Available: As we all get older family commitments take over leaving us less time to burn the candle at both ends. If you and your guests are in that phase of life, adapt the time scale of the games accordingly. Dont play complicated games that take hours to play. Your guests wont thank you.

Attitude of Guests : When it comes to party games there are some occassions that are more appropriate than others.  Don’t assume  just because they are at your party the guests will want to play party games and participate in the activities you have planned. Be sensitive to the mood of your guests and don’t feel that the games have to be played.

Age profile of the Attentees: This will determineon the type of games that you can use. A group of energetic 20 years olds will like different games to a family gathering aged 0 to 80.

Props: Make sure you have all the material and props you require to play the games.

Timing: Plan the introduction of party games for the appropriate time. There is no point in having ice-breaker games as people are planning to leave.

Remember the aim of the party in general and the games in particular is to ensure the guests have an pleasant and relaxing time. That is up to you the host. By creating the right atmosphere, guests will relax and start to enjoy themselves. Don’t spoil it by trying to force them to play party games.

Of course if you are looking for party supplies don’t forget partyproductsdirect .co.uk can point you in the right direction.

Children’s Birthday Party Plans

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

When it comes to childrens birthday parties I am a great believer in proper planning and creating lists of things to do. A few simple, well planned rules will keep the party running smoothly. So let’s get a list organised

1. make a list of the guests names and telephone numbers.
2. have a simple first aid kit prepared and check if any of the guests have a nut allergy.
3. Prevent accidents by been proactive.  Safely store any dangerous garden implements.
4. If you have booked an entertainer have a contingency plan in case he can’t make it.
5. Make a detailed list of the party games you are planning. This is essential.

Propably the most important thing to do when hosting a party for your child is to get help. The more support you have from friends or family the better.

Don’t forget the party supplies either. Shop online for the themed tableware, party invitations and decorations  and make sure you check the delivery well in advance.
